How We Rate Crete Car Hire Companies
Our scoring is built for an independent Crete comparison: it rewards firms whose written terms match their marketing, and it judges brokers and direct local operators on their own merits.

Our Approach
Around Crete does not sell or broker car hire. We assess the companies that serve Crete so visitors can make an informed choice. Our aim is not to crown one 'best' firm overall, but to score each provider on a single transparent formula and then label them by use case - best broker, best true zero-excess local, best price-discovery platform, best resort-delivery option - because a UK or EU tourist's right answer depends on their trip.
These criteria drive the rankings on our Crete car hire comparison, and feed the practical advice in our car-hire guide.
What We Evaluate and How Much It Counts
Each provider is scored against six weighted criteria. The weights reflect what actually goes wrong on Crete: most post-trip complaints come from contract friction - deposits, fuel and unclear exclusions - rather than the car itself.
| Criterion | Weight | What we look for |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency of terms | 30% | Whether excess, deposit, fuel, age limits, exclusions and cancellation are published clearly, and whether marketing pages contradict the contract |
| Financial friction | 25% | Whether a credit-card hold is required, whether genuine no-deposit / no-excess exists, and the risk of desk upsells or reimbursement-after-damage |
| Reputation and depth | 20% | Aggregate rating plus number of reviews from the current and prior season; volume matters but never outweighs transparency |
| Crete coverage | 10% | HER, CHQ, Heraklion Port, hotel delivery, and east / west / island-wide resort reach |
| Change flexibility | 10% | Free cancellation, the free-cancellation window, penalties and how clear the process is |
| Local suitability | 5% | Practical fit for Crete: Balos and off-road clarity, hotel delivery, resort pickup and cruise-passenger handling |
Why Transparency Outweighs Star Ratings
We deliberately penalise a provider when its promises are not backed by the contract. A firm with a slightly lower rating but clear, written zero-excess and no-deposit terms can rank above a higher-rated firm with vague supplier-level small print. On Crete it is the fine contractual detail - not the average star score - that most often turns into a complaint after the trip.
Brokers and Local Operators Are Judged Separately
A broker sells choice, an interface and support; a direct local operator sells its own fleet and its own excess, deposit and fuel rules. We do not force them into one league table. A broker row describes the platform's stated policy, while the binding terms come from whichever local supplier it assigns - so for brokers we also tell readers to check the individual car's conditions.
Our Sources
Ratings are taken primarily from Trustpilot, with Google or Trustindex noted where they are the attributed source, captured as a mid-2026 snapshot. Policy details (excess, deposit, fuel, age, exclusions, pickup points and cancellation) come from each provider's own published terms and help pages, cross-checked between two independent research passes. Where a figure could not be verified from a concrete, attributed source, we list the provider without that figure rather than estimate it.
Limitations and Conflicts We Record
Some numbers differ between sources - for example, the headline review count for Rental Center Crete, and Auto Europe's score on its global versus UK Trustpilot profiles. Where sources conflict we take the more conservative, better-attributed figure and flag the discrepancy. Meta-search sites (Skyscanner, TravelSupermarket) and pure marketplaces (GetRentacar) are kept out of the main ranking because they do not set a single, verifiable Crete-wide rulebook; they compare or pass you on to another provider.
Terms, fees and ratings change between seasons. We re-check provider terms and review snapshots periodically and date our assessments so readers can see how current they are. If you spot a term that no longer matches a provider's site, treat the provider's own written booking conditions as authoritative and let us know.
